Children's Services Worker
Education - Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) They are responsible for taking care of a child’s needs when they are first brought into the Agency’s care and act as a direct advocate for the child and work primarily on behalf of the child’s needs like a surrogate parent. When children are brought into care, problem-solving starts immediately on their behalf. A Children’s Services Worker does everything from consulting with the child’s school to addressing academic issues to helping children receive financial grants and bursaries for post-secondary education things a parent would typically do. There are many faucets to this job - working with every department at the Agency, foster parents and social organizations, which requires a great deal of organization. An empathetic attitude is also essential, to understand these children who have dealt with trauma. There is a need to stay connected to everything that is going on in the child’s life to work in their best interest. Children's Services Workers try to educate foster parents and caregivers about children’s behaviour. Trying to understand what these children have been through goes a long way to understanding why they act out. Like most positions at the Agency, this role requires flexibility and long hours.
