Amendments to the Child and Family Services Act put the interest of children first.

The safety, protection and interests of children are now considered above all else, because of changes to the Child and Family Services Act (CFSA), which became law on March 31, 2000. The amendments are the first major changes to Ontario's child protection laws in over a decade, and significantly improve the community's ability to protect children from abuse and neglect.

Family and Children's Services of St. Thomas and Elgin welcomes the changes, realizing that it will have a dramatic impact on the services and programs it offers. The major changes are outlined below.

Summary of changes to the CFSA

  • Duty to report
  • Evidence of past parenting
  • Earlier and more decisive intervention
  • Improved access to information
  • Access to Crown Wards
  • Regular review of the CFSA
